Quad Cities Airshow 2005

Pictures taken on Saturday, June 25th at the Quad Cities Airshow, Davenport, Iowa Airport. It was a very hazy, hot, day and many of the pictures are obscured by the haze. Temperatures were in the mid 90s with high humidity. Probably the most stunning picture is of a P-51 Mustang "Gunfighter" sitting on the ground with a wall of smoke behind him. When the P-38 Lightning flew in (directly from Texas, as I understand), a ground pyro display went up right in front of us - and I think it was a bit more than they had planned for. It set the grass on fire in the runway area for a large distance and it took 30+ minutes to put out. While that was going on the P-51 landed and I had the opportunity for the shot - and it's quite stunning.

The Thunderbird display was typical, not as good as the Blue Angels - but I did take some nice photographs at least.

2005 Vacation
June 11-22, South Dakota and Wyoming

Prairie Dogs at Wind Cave National Park

Some real nice picures of the little rodents - some taken by my 9 year old Jacob.

Buffalo at Custer National Park

A few pictures of Buffalo, including one stunning picture right at one of the entrances to the park. We've never seen it so green in South Dakota!

Antelope at Custer National Park

More wildlife pictures. Antelope are as plentiful in South Dakota and Wyoming as squirrels are here in Northern IL.

Fishing in the Black Hills
and Military Maneuvers

The Army was out playing in the entire Black Hills area. Convoys of 20-30 vehicles at a time were moving through the park and in the towns as well - and we came upon one of their encampments and took some pictures as well.

Cabin in Hill City

For 4 days we had a cabin in Hill City, SD at the Rafter J Bar Ranch. Nice place to stay, reasonable prices - and right in the middle of where we wanted to be. Calm & Peaceful.

Ft. Laramie, WY

Fort Laramie is a National Historic Site in southeastern Wyoming. If you're ever traveling westward on I-80, it's well worth the time to stop. It served as an anchor for military operations, communication, supply and logistics during the "Great Sioux War."

Mt. Rushmore

I think everybody has at least seen a picture of Mount Rushmore - it's as beautiful as the pictures show. Well worth going to at least once in your life.

Jewel Cave National Monument

Jewel Cave National Monument is one of the largest caves in the world and is truly beautiful. Out of all the caves in SD, this is definitely the one to go to.

Indian Tipi Rings & Dinosaur Fossils

On a private ranch in SE Wyoming, we were able to view some rock formations where Indians had set up camp for an extended period of time - and very near to there is a Morrison formation (pictured) where fossilized Dinosaur remains are abundant. See what we found!

Ellsworth Air Force Museum

Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD is the home to the 28th Bomb Wing, currently B-1B bombers. The base museum is a nice place to visit.

Oregon Trail Ruts

Some fantastic remnants of the Oregon Trail run through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. See some deeply carved ruts in the rocks in Wyoming in these pictures.

Uncle Barry & Aunt Peg's House

3 very nice days spent with relatives in Wheatland, WY
